The blurb on this book says that Kee being intent on escape and after several starts he finally made it.

But what is so dissapointing is that the book end abruptly with Kee still a prisoner of war and no hope of escape even suggested.

Yes, the blurb is totally misleading: Kee didn't escape in any proper sense, but was rescued by the advancing Allies. I'd also agree with you that the book's abrupt end is a weakness in what is otherwise a superb book.
